Guest teachers – Meredith Little

Meredith Little

Elder and Wisdom Guide

I am personally honoured and wildly excited to be able to bring Meredith Little to EarthHeart to offer her profound teachings and presence here in the UK.

This is a rare opportunity to work with her that may not come around again.

Hosting powerful elders and their teachings from ancient lineages is such a precious gift for us. These immersions offer an intimate chance to sit with elders the like of which we rarely see in our modern culture.

The teachings go deep, and there is a profound transmission that only happens when sitting in the presence of such carriers of wisdom. Through vision lodge, through deep work in nature and the guidance of these incredible elders many gifts are on offer.

The Death Lodge

A week-long immersion at Earthheart, with elder Meredith Little,  founder of the School of Lost Borders, and Simone Silverpath.

Imagine you live in a community that has its own “Death Lodge” a place where a dying person can rest and receive the visitors who come to say goodbye.  This is the natural place of “making it good” with your people so you can cleanly move on, and they can let you go in the fullness of completion.

An old hospice teaching says that to complete a relationship five things must be said: – I forgive you – you forgive me – thank you – I love you – goodbye.  This is the sacred work of the Death Lodge. One of the great challenges we all face in life is to do this work now, when it is most needed, rather than waiting until the last days of our dying.  We call this the work of ‘The Life Lodge’.

If we don’t step into this lodge, if we don’t keep our relationships current, we risk being weighed down by a lifetime of woundings, angers, and regrets that make it more difficult to surrender to our death, or to the fullness of our life.  For most people, the hardest part of Life Lodge or Death Lodge work is the giving and receiving of forgiveness and apology. Too often we become stuck in the mire of too much memory, or we hide from ourselves and try to forget.  But by steering clear of the Life Lodge, we risk turning into yet another cycle of anger, vengeance and victimization.

Meredith will guide us into an exploration of what the four shields of the Life Lodge / Death Lodge have to teach us about restoring a personal and collective balance that embraces the wounds of the past. Where is it that we are likely to get stuck in the turning of this wheel? When might we forgive too soon, or apologize too shallowly? When might we hold on to resentment, punish or withhold our hearts?

The treasures to be found in these lodges are godlike qualities: mercy, compassion, essential self-respect, and maybe even the grace to forgive the unforgivable.

If you listen, today more than ever, you can hear a cry for this kind of healing – be it in the lives of individual friends, or in the biggest stories of our time.

That cry is calling for each of us to do the wrenching work of self-reflection and personal healing, which evokes the deeper levels of our humanity, offering the possibility of a reconciliation with self and others that is sacred, humbling, and ultimately life-changing.

About Meredith

Meredith and her husband Steven Foster co-founded Rites of Passage Inc. in 1976 and The School of Lost Borders in 1981, pioneering new methods and dynamics of modern pan-cultural passage rites in the wilderness, and creating innovative practices of ‘field eco-therapy’.

The essence of their work is captured in articles, chapters, an award-winning documentary film, Lost Borders: Coming of Age in the Wilderness, and books that include: The Book of the Vision Quest, The Roaring of the Sacred River, The Four Shields: The Initiatory Seasons of Human Nature.

Since Steven’s death in 2003 Meredith continues both nationally and internationally to guide and train others. She has also co-founded along with Scott Eberle a new branch of Lost Borders entitled The Practice of Living and Dying, to help break the taboos and silence that pervade the subject of death and to help restore dying to its natural place in the cycles of life. Meredith is currently the director of The Practice of Living and Dying, Lost Borders International, and owner of Lost Borders Press.

About Simone Silverpath

Simone will be holding space alongside Meredith. She has supported Meredith for over 20 years and their alchemy creates a strong container for deep work. Simone is also a respected elder in the UK with her own work of 40 years which is based in the north of England. She is an experienced psychotherapist and author of ‘Holding the Space’ a radical book offering a transformation way of working with trauma and abuse.
